Looking back at the above video from 2022 is mind-blowing to see how much has changed just since last year. First of all, you’ll notice we attempted a little soil strip on the outside of the main garden, right between the bridge and concrete paver walkway. That was there for as long as the bridge has been there.
My original thought was that I could grow lavender there and try to keep pests out of the garden. The lavender kept dying. I eventually realized how badly this area kept flooding. I thought there was a leak in my main drip line, but when we dug up the line in 2023, we discovered that wasn’t the case at all.
We did add the garden fence up on the hill, sometime around the fall of 2021, to finally keep the dogs out of sunflower hill. I also put one of my patio tables in this area but throughout 2022, I realized what a pain it was to have to move the table every time we had to mow. (which is at least every 6 – 7 days)
That patio table issue is what inspired my “grapevine grotto” in 2023.
You can also see the concrete terrace garden that we built over on sunflower hill. This worked out SO MUCH better than the landscape timbers we had there in 2021.
And check out the old walkway design. I’m not sure what I was thinking, having it run down the middle like that. Now that we’ve moved it over toward the rocks, it just makes so much more sense. We eliminated that tricky patch that was so hard to mow.
Here are some more photos of the garden in 2022. Do you notice any of the other changes we had made over the year?
We’ll be back soon to show you how we built the terrace garden and why. Be sure to watch for our 2023 updates where I detail all the changes we’ve made since last year.
Let us know what you think! If you have pictures of your own garden, we would love to see them! Feel free to email us.
